NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- A new study shows that prescription medications like Celebrex can cause heart attacks and other serious problems, a new study shows.
The study,, published in theNew England Journal of Medicinein 2015, compared Celebrex, an arthritis drug, to a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) called.
Celebrex was found to have fewer side effects than NSAIDs, which were the most common. However, the study found that Celebrex was associated with an increased risk of heart attacks,, and strokes. Celebrex and NSAIDs are both used to treat arthritis and can cause serious side effects.
The findings may be concerning for some patients who are taking medications that are known to cause heart attacks and strokes.
However, the study also found that Celebrex was more likely to be associated with increased heart attacks, heart attacks, and strokes.
"Our findings suggest that this class of drugs may be more effective than traditional NSAIDs in treating cardiovascular disease," said Dr. Steven Nissen, assistant professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine and director of the New England College of Pharmacy's Heart Disease and Stroke Research Program. The FDA does not approve Celebrex for use in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, and its use is limited to people who have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, which causes inflammation.
Celebrex is not indicated for use in children younger than eight years old.
